Edmonia Lewis

Edmonia Lewis was the first recognized African-American Indigenous sculptor.

She is well known for her work sculpting portraits of abolitionists as well as creating works that centered on her African American and Chippewa heritage. Lewis worked mainly in Rome from 1865-1907. Sadly many of her sculptures have been lost to time, but the ones that survive are a beautiful testament to their maker.
